About Dr. Crifase

Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired?

I’ve been there before and I know how it feels…

During my schooling, I developed all sorts of gastrointestinal problems and ended up with the kind of fatigue that made it difficult to get out of bed and function.

I was getting skin rashes on my arms and chronic gut issues and extreme fatigue.

It probably didn’t help that I was eating gluten every day, living off of slightly sugary sweets (personal favorite was dark chocolate), not exercising and under a tremendous amount of stress.

It doesn’t take a genius to know that this is a recipe for disaster and yet I wasn’t really able to stop.

With all of these issues and problems, I was lucky to know where to look for help…

I ended up getting some blood tests done at my school health clinic and I did have a feeling I was reacting to foods but wasn’t sure which ones or how many…

I got my results back and I was reacting to almost all of the foods I was eating on a daily basis, which was a lot – everything from Chipotle burrito bowls, to chocolate to eggs (oh no, my favorite things!)

I was devastated. This led me on a journey of hundreds of hours of research, watching videos, self-experimentation until I found how to fix my problems.

I finally was able to “diagnose” my problem – I had a combination of Adrenal Fatigue (thank you long hours of school and childhood stress), Gluten and dairy sensitivities, Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and a number of basic nutrient deficiencies including Vitamin D.

Once I corrected these problems I felt better than I have ever felt in my entire life: My skin rashes went away, I lost weight, had more energy and didn’t have any sign of gut dysfunction.

I’m still experimenting on my own health (even today) and happy to report that I’m much better.

But this experience opened my eyes to another world and a way of approaching health care and management.

It helped me improve the way I looked at patients, the questions I asked and how I approached management.

This lead me to a specific practice style which is still evolving:

The practice of functional medicine and nutrition!

That is to say that each patient is highly unique and therefore each patient will need a different plan than the patient before them.

This sounds so simple and so obvious but it really isn’t the way that healthcare is approached right now, nor taught.

Many treatments follow a simple algorithm with symptom—> diagnosis —> treatment, a pill-for-this-pill-for-that model which makes the practice and application of medicine and healthcare quick and effective, but certainly very impersonal and not concerned with more than the superficial issues at hand.

This applies to chronic disease states such as hypothyroidism, autoimmune conditions, gastrointestinal issues, diabetes, obesity, hypertension, high cholesterol, etc.

Doesn’t it make sense to base your treatment on the individual – their lifestyles, genetics, environment and THEN form a treatment plan specific to that person? Addressing their unique biology, just as they have their own unique thumbprint?

Well, that’s what I started to do and the results were amazing!

I noticed that by taking this approach most patients would start to experience improvement in almost every facet of their life.

Even if they came in for weight loss they would report more energy, better sex, improved mental clarity and so on.

Why I Focus on Hypothyroidism, Autoimmune Conditions, and Leaky Gut

Ever get the feeling that your doctor is missing something?

Well, that same thing happened to my mom.

She was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) when I was very young… and I can’t even tell you how many different doctors she saw – probably in the hundreds.

I personally watched her suffer from debilitating symptoms that progressively worsened.

Because of what I watched her go through I have realized that many conditions just as ALS, can begin YEARS before someone actually gets a diagnosis.

I was not able to help my mom and always wished I could have. I was too young and did not know what I know today.

But I remember, the only thing she was offered by traditional medicine was: Take this pill, take that pill, get this lab test done, get that procedure done… all of which only addressed her symptoms!

Sure she may have gotten some alleviation from prescription medications, but at what cost? Did it solve the problem? Unfortunately not…

Functional medicine was not given to her as an option at the time… to look at underlying imbalances, root dysfunctions… this I’m sure is what would have benefitted her the most.

Since that time I’ve devoted my time and energy to helping people get their life back from all different chronic disease states.

On this website, you will find a tremendous amount of information designed to help people with chronic health conditions from thyroid to weight loss to autoimmunity to gut issues.
